At a moment when his marriage and career are both in crisis, Ferdinand goes on the run with former girlfriend Marianne, who is being pursued by right-wing gangsters. It’s an excellent example of a ‘death drive’ film, in which the energy of cinematic movement merges with the headlong pace of a motor-car movie, in a heedless drive towards a stop: the sea, or the end of a love affair, but ultimately, death itself. Marianne is typical of Godard’s duplicitous and deadly women, whose intense desirability masks their treachery.

The spirit of rebellion is in the air in Jean-Luc Godard’s prescient portrait of the turbulence of life in the mid-1960s.
