100 Years of Cinema

1924 – The Central

Moving images become a part of the entertainment of Hatter Street’s Music hall, The Central. A destructive fire sees refurbishment take place, birthing the project room that is still used for Screen 1.

1959 – Abbeygate

Businessman Harold Miller buys the Hatter St cinema and names it Abbeygate.

1970 – Two Screen Cinema

Renovation work sees the opening of a second screen at Abbeygate.

2010 – Digital Projection

Picture House buys the business and brings the projection technology into the 21st Century with digital projectors installed. Six years later Abbeygate becomes a fully independent cinema.

2021 – Re-opening

Following the global pandemic which threatened the entire cinema industry, Abbeygate re-opens with it’s state-of-the-art Premier Screen.

2024 – Centenary

Abbeygate Cinema celebrates it’s 100th Birthday.
