As the third national lockdown looms, we’re taking the time to get you more acquainted with our wonderful team. This time we talk to Head Chef, Alex.
Introduce yourself! What is your role at Abbeygate?
I’m Alex, I’m Head Chef at Abbeygate’s No4 restaurant.
How long have you been a part of the Abbeygate Team?
As of July of this year, I will have been with Abbeygate for 10 years.
What’s your favourite film? Why should people watch it?
It’s a Wonderful Life. One of the main reasons I love this movie so much is that while most people see it as a feel-good movie, at it’s core, it’s a tragedy. Repeated viewings, which I have done every year, emphasises more and more how dark this movie really is. Best appreciated on the big screen and in the original black and white.
What are you watching right now?
For movies, I am waiting until I can see them in the cinema again. I am currently watching the latest series of Cobra Kai. Being a fan of the original The Karate Kid and the Canadian high school soap Degrassi High. This show hits all my nostalgia buttons.
Any book recommendations?
The Heart Goes Last by Margaret Atwood. Just finished this book, and while the story itself gets quite ridiculous at points, Atwood’s writing style is so engaging it keeps you entertained no matter what she is describing.
What are you listening to?
Unfortunately my children are dictating the music at the moment, but not all bad. Lots of My Chemical Romance, Fallout Boy and Panic! At the Disco.
What’s your lockdown guilty pleasure?
Reese Peanut Butter Cups and Kahlua & Milk
What’s your favourite thing to have happened at Abbeygate?
Well, I am biased, but would say the opening of the restaurant, which allows me to bring my culinary skills to Bury St Edmunds.
What are you most excited to do when this is over?
A night out! Dinner and a movie, with and without the children.
